Charman Earthmoving & Heavy Haulage P/L was formed in May 2002. The Directors of the company had previously been trading as D & GM Charman Earthmoving P/L since 1990.
The decision to change our company name was made as we offer both earthmoving and heavy haulage services to our clients and we thought that our company name should reflect this.
Our company undertakes various earthmoving projects such as:
- House & shed sites
- Road construction
- Dam sinking
- Sub divisions
- Clearing
- Soil conservation works
- Bulk Earthworks
- Vineyard Preparation
- Truck and machine hire
- Detail excavations
- Horse arenas
- Heavy Haulage
Our heavy haulage team consists of four prime movers, which tow both quad and tri spread low loaders. We have a carrying capacity of 54 tonne. A large percentage of our work is carried out around Canberra however we do travel to other states as required.
We have a large client base in Canberra and the surrounding districts for both our earthmoving and heavy haulage services.
Most of our works are carried out for local Shire Councils, NSW & ACT Forestry and local civil contractors. We have also carried out works for Telstra and the ACT & NSW Governments.
We attribute the company’s success to the high standard of work that is required from all of our employees and to the satisfaction they have given to our many customers over the years.
Our aim is to provide all of our customers with an affordable price and a high quality service.

David began operating earthmoving equipment when he was 12 years old on farms near his home. He was first officially employed in the earthmoving industry at age 18 by Collis Bros Earthmoving as a bulldozer operator. After being in the industry for 36 years and after a failed partnership in another company he decided to start his own business.
In September 1990 he started a company with his wife Glenda and they operated as D & GM Charman Earthmoving P/L.
The company began with only one Caterpillar Bulldozer. David operated this machine himself and undertook small jobs such as house sites, dams and clearing works.
As the reputation of David’s work grew, so did the company. More machines were purchased and operators were hired so that the company could carry out works on a larger scale.
David also purchased prime movers and low loaders so that the company could expand into the heavy haulage industry.
In May 2002 he formed another company called Charman Earthmoving and Heavy Haulage Pty Ltd.
David currently sources all of the work for this company and oversees all projects that are undertaken. He also occasionally operates equipment when required.
Glenda was the company secretary and bookkeeper up until June 1999 when she decided to let her daughter Kylie take over the office work.
Glenda still provides support in the office as well as driving the pilot escort vehicle for the prime movers when required. She also collects parts when the machines are in for services and travels to work sites to fuel up the machines.

Kylie began work with our previous company as a part time secretary in July 1998. After working for the company for a year Kylie was promoted to the role of Office Manager when her mother Glenda decided to step out of the office.
Kylie carries out all of the duties that are necessary in running an office. She gained her office management experience after completing an office traineeship and working for various companies over a 5 year period before commencing work with our company.
Kylie’s role has expanded greatly over the years and she is currently our General Manager. She is responsible for the financial management of the company, overseeing the office staff and she is currently expanding into the area of OH&S management.
Mark is the manager of our heavy haulage team. He is responsible for organising loads for the trucks and ensuring that they are maintained adequately.
Mark began working for our previous company in 1994 as a plant operator. When the company expanded into the heavy haulage industry he became our first truck driver. As this area of our business expanded we needed to purchase more trucks and Mark became our transport manager.
Ken began his career in the earthmoving industry at the age of 16 with Collis Bros. Earthmoving as a compactor and scraper operator.
Over the past 31 years he has worked for civil contractors such as Guideline (ACT) Pty Ltd, B&L Excavations, Kenoss Pty Ltd in the capacity of plant operator and/or foreman.
Ken began with our first company, D&GM Charman Earthmoving P/L, in 1999 and his employment carried over to Charman Earthmoving & Heavy Haulage P/L upon it’s inception in May 2002.
Ken has been the Foreman/Supervisor on all of our subdivision projects.
